Hosted by County Monaghan Partnership, with support from Cavan Monaghan Rural Development, the third annual awards presentation night, Dec 8th '08, was held Monday night last in the Iontas Centre, Castleblayney.
It was a terrific way to round off the year, by recognizing and rewarding volunteers and local community groups who have worked tirelessly to “Make Monaghan a Better Place”.
In welcoming the crowd of almost 300 people, Gabriel O’Connell, Manager of County Monaghan Partnership expressed delight on behalf of County Monaghan Partnership and Cavan Monaghan Rural Development at hosting this Awards Event which recognizes the excellent work being done in the C & V sector throughout County Monaghan.
He congratulated the nominees and award winners and urged them to keep up the good work, whether or not they win an award.
In referring to the need to continue to promote equality and fairness, Gabriel pointed out that in 2006:
- One-third of those in consistent poverty were children
- 40% of ill or people with a disability are at risk of poverty
- One in three lone parent households experienced consistent poverty
and said “Our guest speaker this evening Fergus Finlay has been a staunch advocate in highlighting such inequalities and working to raise public awareness on these important issues.”
He elaborated by saying: “All across this county and the State, community activism has been to the fore in bridging the gap between the equitable provision of public services and what is actually experienced on the ground. - This coupled with a downturn in our economy and cuts in public spending, now means that the state will find it even more difficult to serve the broad needs of its citizens.
Community groups have been busy using local knowledge, & providing a much needed local stimulus in their Communities inc. practical help, service provision or economic development initiatives.
Once again civic society, through local Community & Voluntary groups is well placed to rise to this challenge. It is the task of Local Development Agencies to support your efforts in building fair and sustainable communities.
Community Development is the glue that ties this local effort together, and Community Leadership gives expression to this local effort and harnesses this very valuable asset.
Indeed without Community Leadership and the individuals who demonstrate the capacity to rally, coordinate and focus this fantastic local effort - this bottom-up, self help and enthusiasm could go largely untapped . . . and this local effort (often referred to by our funders as ‘Social Capital’) would not be realized and brought to bear on the broad range of important social issues & needs facing our society today - Areas like affordable Childcare, Social housing, social and employment needs for vulnerable individuals, second chance education & training, Rural Transport to name but a few, are all areas benefiting enormously from the work of community and voluntary initiatives.
And one thing all these successful Com initiatives have in common, is someone who is willing to go the extra mile for their community – the often un-sung hero’s - these are our Community Leaders.
Here this evening we applaud their commitment, we value their contribution, and we want to say to you - we support your vision for vibrant and sustainable communities throughout Co Monaghan”.

Guest of honour for the occasion was the well known and highly respected Fergus Finlay, Chief Executive of Barnardos, Ireland’s largest children’s charity. Fergus who has just completed a four year term as Chairperson of Special Olympics Ireland, and is the current chair of Volunteering Ireland enthralled the audience with his insightful and motivational speech.
