Addressing Educational Inequality in a Rural Setting

Following on from the launch of the research report “Addressing Educational Inequality in a Rural Setting”, the Education Forum hosted a workshop for all key stakeholders, statutory, voluntary and community on 31st January 2008 in the Iontas Centre.

The purpose of the workshop, which was attended by about 50 people, was to bring life to the research findings, provide an opportunity for stakeholders to consider the results of the research, react to it and build on it with the anticipated outcome of developing solutions to address the gaps inclusively.

Jimmy McGeough, Director of Monaghan Education Centre and Education Forum member opened the event and highlighted that this was the first time that key stakeholders from both formal and informal sectors had come together to discuss educational provision in County Monaghan.

Anne Eustace from Eustace Patterson Ltd, consultants who undertook the research, gave a presentation on the key findings of the research and following, this smaller group discussions took place on four key topics - Developing Principals Network in County Monaghan, Parental Involvement in Education, Out of School / Complimentary Supports and Provision of Services for Children with Special Needs. The feedback from these discussion groups is being collated by the Education Forum with a view to deriving actions going forward.
